Telangiectasis – commonly known as thread veins, is an extremely common problem affecting approximately 80% of the population.

They are broken veins which look purple/red or blue colour and can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on the face and legs.

They are caused by a variety of factors including exposure to the elements such as sun, wind and extreme cold or hot conditions.

Thread veins can also be the result of hormonal changes whilst pregnant and can also be genetic.

People who stand for long periods of time as part of their occupation are also prone to developing thread veins in their legs.

Medications such as HRT, the contraceptive pill and use of steroids creams can increase the likelihood of thread veins developing.
